Notes:
Before statehood Part of Virginia
West Virginia became a state following the Wheeling Conventions of 1861, at the start of the American Civil War. Delegates from the Unionist counties of northwestern Virginia decided to break away from Virginia, which also included secessionist counties in the new state. West Virginia was admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863
When Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861, the portion now known as West Virginia broke off to form its own state. Admitted in 1863, West Virginia was the only state created from breaking apart from a Confederate state during the Civil War and played a key role as a border state.
